name:
Kehkhiro Hekhi - those who lack the vocal equipment to pronounce her name (which is most people) are asked to call her Kiki
age:
Young adult, specific age unknown
gender:
Accepts female pronouns
species:
Churrhehynan - feline-esque bipedal humanoids
job:
Dance and acrobatics instructor at the Weyrd's general education school
appearance:
According to Kehkhiro, she is of an average build for one of her clan, whatever that means. Standing straight - an uncommon posture for this highly active feline-featured humanoid - she measures in at about 157 cm from padded heel to the crown of her head, discounting the peak of her mobile ears, and her build is one of lean muscle and minimal fat. The shape of her skull may be called a blend of human and feline structures, with a more spherical shape than the average human accented by a protruding jaw and nose which form a somewhat muzzle-like appearance. Her teeth, however, are of a more human style, providing greater utility than feline dentition and clearly identifying her species as omnivorous. Her ears, perched proportionally higher for the rounder head shape, are loosely triangular in shape and naturally cupped to channel sound to the canal. Their mobility is frequently demonstrated through twitches, flicks, and, when upset, flattening against the crown of her head. Amber-and-green eyes are round as marbles with round pupil constriction, typical of a large predator, and she appears to have similar low-light vision quality to that of a Terran feline.
The shape of her head is hardly the only place where Kehkhiro shows a feline flavoring to her form. Her body is covered in a short, dense coat of soft fur, ranging in color from white to cream to orange, though she does not rely upon her fur for warmth; when she can be coaxed to speak of it Kehkhiro describes the coloring, length, and texture of her fur to be a clan marking rather than serving as protection from the elements or predators. If the color were more uniform it might be mistaken for unusually thick body hair among some species; as it is, the appearance is clearly that of a furred hide. Her coloring is mottled, ranging from light to dark to light again with no discernible pattern to it - at least not one anyone outside of her species would recognize. The exception is her tail, which is patterned in slender bands of alternating cream and orange.
Kehkhiro's physique appears to be fairly standard for a bipedal humanoid, with joints and muscle groups in all the customary places. Her fur hides muscle definition, casting shadows which mask the clear lines of her lean frame, but her lithe build, endless agility, and fluidity of movement demonstrate her physical prowess. Her hands and feet are also in line with a standard bipedal form, their greatest divergence being short retractable claws at the tips of her fingers and toes. Unlike a true feline she walks plantigrade, rising to her toes only as part of performances or when she needs a few centimeters of extra height.
Kehkhiro would customarily wear clothing for warmth and no other purpose; her species has no nudity taboo and no visible sex characteristics which could cause embarrassment to other species if exposed. Since her arrival at the Weyrd, however, she has taken to wearing loose-fit pants and tunics, the former tailored to allow her tail free movement, out of a desire to fit in with the frequently clothes-wearing humanoid portion of the populace. She has no compunction against shedding the garments to avoid damage to them, or constricted movements when she needs full range of motion, nor does she wear strictly modesty-oriented clothing (for example, she does not bother with a bathing suit when swimming).
personality:
The foundation of Kehkhiro's personality is loyalty: to her clan, to her society, to her friends, in that order. Kehkhiro's life - until the PIF stole her away, anyhow - focused entirely around providing for her clan and supporting the success of her society as a whole; now that she is at the Weyrd she lacks a focus for her culturally-reinforced dedication. This is not to say that her loyalty is for sale, or that she is slavishly devoted to those she holds loyalty toward, rather, she feels cut adrift and purposeless without the social structure and cultural mores that tied her to her clan. Thus far she has done what she can to repay the Weyrd for taking her in after her arrival but she does not feel a real connection, or sense of loyalty, to the community. The handful of shinies who have bonded with her are slowly re-establishing a sense of inclusiveness for her,
Kehkhiro is a very private person, sharing little of her emotions, personal thoughts, and history with others until she grows close to them. She is not unwilling to engage in conversation, rather, she prefers to discuss neutral topics which do not touch on the personal. This is a cultural trait; her people do not discuss personal matters openly and it is considered rude to inquire about them.
Kehkhiro is still learning the common tongue of the Weyrd; her speech is heavily accented, and she does not yet have a robust vocabulary. She falls back on Churrhehynan when her knowledge of Common fails her. When one of her mindspeech-capable shinies is present she will lean on their ability to translate her thoughts and words, and those of others, but is making a concerted effort to not require this aid in typical daily interactions.
Kehkhiro has a perfectionist streak a kilometer wide. She is finicky about the drape of her clothes, the tidiness of her appearance, accuracy in communication, precision in movement, and much, much more. If there is an aspect of herself about which she can obsess, she will, and will devote herself to improving upon it as soon as someone brings it to her attention - provided there is no conflict with her cultural beliefs.
Having lost her clan and her society, Kehkhiro is at a loss as to what she should do with her life now. She has no direction, no goals to work toward, for she cannot conceive of a way to return home nor would she want to subject herself to the slavery of her people once more. She has never before been on her own, always surrounded by clanmembers in the past, and suffers frequent bouts of depression and anxiety due to her feelings of isolation. Since she started gaining bonds with shinies and went to work at the Weyrd's school her depression has eased, but she still frequently retreats to her home after stressful events to meditate and immerse herself in memories of her clan and friends. While not among the more devout of her species, she prays to their gods for the safety, health, and freedom of her people at dusk every evening, sending her hopes into the stars on the last rays of the setting sun.
history:
Kehkhiro is closed-mouth about her history before the PIF deposited her at the Weyrd, covered in mothballs and not much else. What little she has shared indicates that she is not unique, being a member of a space-faring species who mirror her attributes, and that she is neither and exemplary nor substandard example of her kind. Further, she isn't properly a 'she', so far as anyone can determine, but since the language of the Weyrd doesn't have a word or pronoun set to match the nature of her species she has adopted a feminine behavior pattern - apparently, being called an 'it' is more than a little offensive to her.
Her talents speak for themselves: she is an acrobat, dancer, all around gymnast; quick on her feet, possessing unparalleled spatial sense, and with an exceptional memory. Occasionally she can be coaxed to speak of her training, which she describes as a grueling experience spanning many fzzt (a period of time for which she has not found an adequate Whazzitian measure) and resulting in many broken bones, yet she speaks of the experience fondly. A few attentive listeners have cottoned on to the fact that her training program was of exceptional quality. What is unclear is whether this quality is the standard for her people or of unusual character.
Kehkhiro has grudgingly shared a little information about her family and work history, though much of it does not translate clearly. Her clan, a group of inter-related families sharing resources, was small by Churrhehynan standards but highly specialized as opposed to the apparently normal structure of diverse trade skills. Her dance troupe was made up entirely of clan members, one of several such groupings which traveled to perform for profit to benefit the clan.
What Kehkhiro does not share is that she is - was - a slave, though she had been enslaved for a relatively short period of time before the PIF snatched her out of captivity. Her race was involved in an interplanetary war with another species and were on the losing side, with the winners enslaving the losers to provide cheap menial services and entertainment. Kehkhiro had been a member of a dance troupe before the war; during hostilities she worked at an R&R camp in a similar capacity. Upon her enslavement at the end of the war she was required to perform acrobatic feats for the entertainment of her masters. While the PIF-snatching was unexpected, the escape from her captors has more than made up for the change in environment and associated isolation from her own kind. As far as she knows, her clan members were enslaved in the same fashion she was, though she has not seen any of them personally following the end of the war.
