Singular: Kurama
Plural: Kurama
Group: Swarm of Kurama
General Info: About a foot tall, Kurama look at their most basic like over-grown mantises, with an upright body and two arms accompanied by a four-legged lower body. Praying mantises. No, not preying! Praying! These peaceful creatures are as harmless as they come, spending all their time focusing on the flow of their spiritual energies and connecting with the balance of the world around them. Peace, clarity, and one-ness are integral to their society. As such, they spend much of their time meditating with the goal of achieving spiritual harmony within. Individual Kurama who fail to maintain harmonic balance are viewed as a disruption to society, as the negative energy of their chi can be felt by the rest of the swarm.
Of course they aren't as simple as just large bugs. Instead of normal wings, theirs resemble the petals of flowers; no specific plant, certainly not from Earth, but you can definitely see a similarity in the soft curves and fragile touch and even a slightly sweet, earthy scent around them, instead of hard shell and translucent gossamer! These petals, fragile as they are, are not suited for true flight, but are sufficient for gliding falls and flutter-assisted hops. Kurama do not need to eat much, and will nibble on pretty much anything organic if it's offered. Though they have faceted eyes as one might expect, they do not convey any emotional information as Dragons' do, only a plain iridescent orb for viewing the world.
Kurama are capable of mindspeech, as well as transmitting and receiving emotions, being a very empathetic species. They will also accentuate their points via gesturing with their forelimbs and general charades, and make various chittering and clicking sounds to aid in their communication efforts. Their natural noises don't really translate into common, although it conveys their general mood fairly well (depressed Kurama will be quiet, an impatient one won't shut up, etc).
Mating Info: Repressing everything is difficult, and during a mating flight the suppressed emotions come out. In a shocking display of aggression the courting Kurama will instinctively instigate frenzied fights among any nearby competition, while the center of their affections watches from safety. Suitors are chosen by a combination of victory and how well they manage to stay devoted to their chakra and repress the potentially overwhelming bloodlust; which of these factors is more important depends on the individual in question. Curiously, both males and females are able to perform both sides of reproduction, and so mating pairs can be any combination of genders with no impact on breeding.
Bonding Info: There is always an even number of Kurama hatched from their eggs. Kurama tend to be drawn towards things relevant to their interests -- violence is likely to repel them, while expressing compassion or logic will inspire faith from them, although there is always the possibility of an individual deciding to take on the challenge of a difficult bond who needs its teachings most. Kurama ranks can be born as any gender and will take any type of gender for their bond.
