It wasn't a pretty sight. Len knew it wasn't going to be, and would have preferred to not even show up, but here he was. Because the Universe did not think he was Retired.
The afternoon was sunny and lovely looking, but it was rather misleading. At the bottom of some steep cliff, lay a dead creature. She might have grown to be a glorious North, but no one would know, now. She had failed at her first challenge, and laid broken far below the abandoned nest. And there was nothing Len could do for her.
Let me watch over them, for a little longer.
His gaze was not on the death in front of him, but to the right, where the young North's spirit stood. She was still beautiful like that, feathers unruffled and wings whole. Likely unseen by any, unless they themselves had the gift of sight, it would likely appear that the doctor was talking to thin air. "You stay as long as you like, darlin'. Whatever makes you happy." It wasn't his job to force souls to the other side.
Besides, there was more to do.
She had not been the only one to fail at flying, though she was the only death at this time.
The I Shall Rise Again Boreas had crash landed, also. She was panting and in pain, right wing broken, but there was a look of defiance in her eyes. This wasn't over.
By the time the drums beat out a quick message, Len had the Boreas' wing in a splint, and a touch of magic made the pain fade into the background.
And, at the very top of the cliff, the To The Stars South inched her way closer to the edge, her wings opening and closing, preparing herself for her first flight. Her Upon A Dream Chinook sister held back, unwilling to get near the edge and chance seeing what was below. Not yet.
Quietly, Len stepped aside to stand near the lingering spirit, and all waited for the South's next move.

To The Stars South

The thrill of adventure, the excitement of flight, she craves adventure and freedom and will not be bound by confinement or rules. Join her, and the bond runs deep, but she is just as happy to take to the skies herself, returning when she is good and ready. Fierce, she is unstoppable, and while her motherly skills might be lacking, as well as her desire to brood a clutch, she is nevertheless not one to turn a blind eye to those that need guarding. Join her, and not only will there be grand adventures in new places, but together there will be protection and safety for all that need it. She will not wait, however, impatient at hesitation. She can make her own way, if she must.
Big, tough, and a little dramatic, she is the color of a thick evergreen forest, with bands of shocking lime across her black flight feathers.
Upon A Dream Chinook

Dreamy, with a head up in the clouds, she's bursting to the gills with stories, poems, and music. With an imagination to rival many, she weaves words like a master, creating vivid imagery in whatever she is saying. Sometimes, this makes her forgetful of the important things, of the life around her, but she does not mean any harm and will always apologize -- though don't expect a lesson learned. Indulge her, interact with her, and she'll love all the more, baring her soul with flowery poetry and haunting songs.
A warm sunrise over a spring meadow, she's a mixture of soft lavender, and speckled pale yellow, while the underside of her wings darken to rose-pink.
And I Shall Rise Again Boreas

Stubborn sums her up well, but this is hardly all that she is. A fighter, a lover, a friend, she will be there through thick or thin. Nothing is going to slow her down, and she's not going to give up on anything, whether its some task she couldn't complete, or her bonded in a trying time. She'll face her fears and grow stronger every day, and if she has to, she'll drag those she's loves with her, kicking in screaming. Confide in her, and trust her, and she will guide and love and be a faithful companion til death do you part.
Like a crisp winter morning, she's gleaming white all over, with pale sunshine edging or tipping her feathers here and there. While her right wing may have been broke as a result of her first flight, she will heal beautifully from it, and show no long term side effects.
